This child probably has the best possible medical attention, I don't think your prayers or magic-spells are going to have the slightest impact on this girl's undisclosed illness. If prayer has ever made the slightest bit of difference to anything please point it out now.

You should be ashamed of yourself. If you do not believe in prayer than don't pray. For the thousands of people that believe faith plays a huge part of recovery than let them pray. What will it hurt? Nothing.. noone.. For one, I will say a prayer for this little girl. The family would appreciate it knowing that someone that they have no clue who they are.. stopped for a second of their day, thought of their sick child, and said a prayer in the hopes that she would be well again... yeah.. I see where you're coming from.. It's awful isn't it!!!!!! I will also say a little silent one for you.. in the hopes that you can knock that big block off your shoulder!!

SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!
Okay! I'm going on a rant!
1. SHUT UP! The power of prayer? You have got to be ******ting me! You might as well be doing jumping-jacks in your living room for Johnny Depp's daughter. "For the thousands of people who believe faith plays a huge part of recovery then let them pray. What will it hurt?"
What it will hurt:
It is a waste of time- people who are kneeling by their bedside (praying) for whatever, could be actually doing things to help. If someone honestly, genuinely wants to help a situation, there are usually many things that that person could do to actually help, but instead many of those people pray because they "believe in the power of prayer" instead of being useful.
It promotes delusion- thousands of people are living in a fantasy world; encouraging prayer furthers the confusion between what is real, verifiable, empirical science, and pseudoscientific crap. It is a delusion that is harmful to society.

Strangely enough I do remember reading some study (of course I cant remember where or by whom so it doesnt really amount to much) that came to the conclusion patients who were prayed for had a higher survival rate. I'm a pretty bif suspect of organized religion but i certainly can buy into their being a scientific explanation behind unknown energy or will being delivered via thoughts and outside dedications. I think it kind of falls in line with Jung's theories of collective unconcious.
And everyone seems to agree that depression is clinical and biological and whatnot. Prayer has certainly helped many people though that.
Not to mention all the crazy televangelists who pretend to be faith healers... for all the rip offs they perform there are some people are truly cured "miraculously" by what can only be presumed is their personal conviction that someone has prayed it out of them. thats got to count for something.

Never post again.
There was a study of cancer patients who got prayers, and another group of cancer patients that thought positively. Well guess what, the 2nd grouped improved greatly in comparison and the first group did not improve nearly as much. Guess this is time to say g0d works in mysterious ways....

That's true, but you're going to make an awful lot of bible thumpin' nincompoops poop in their pants.
It's got to be heartwrenching to see your 7 year old daughter felled by a serious illness. So I sympathize with Mr. Depp and his wife Vanessa ... and the mommies and daddies of suffering and dying children in the hell we've made of Iraq and the mommies and daddies of broken, starving and dying children in Darfur that the world has forgotten.

Can christians only pray? i was under the impression that hundreds of religions evolved independantly of one another and all include some form of prayer to a higher pwer in their practices. I might be wrong however. perhaps they all stole that theory from jesus.... let me know, idiot.

You have it right, itsme2!!
Just having a positive outlook on the situation does wonders to the being!! It may not cure all, but it definately makes the hardest of times a bit easier!!

No, good guess though. Studies have shown that prayer actually does make a difference- but in the opposite direction of the intended. In several case studies, patients who were told they were being prayed for fared worse than those who were either told nothing, or that they were not being prayed for. The reason for this is that many of the patients believed that something was seriously wrong with them if they needed to be prayed for. Imagine yourself in the hospital, not entirely certain what's wrong with you, and you are told that there are groups of people praying for you. You're going to think: Holy crap! Something is REALLY wrong with me!

Are you going to reply negatively to everyone on here that says they'll pray for Depp's daughter? Don't you have better things to do? You seem as bad as a biblethumper.
It's pretty sick that you are fishing for a political fight on a thread about a little girl who could be dying. You have 14 off-topic replies on here! As someone else on here said - get over it!
Did you think about Depp's daughter even once while reading this story? Or were you to hung up on your own self-righteousness and need for attention?

Those of us with children, worry about them when they are sick. We worry about them and then we will take any well wishing anyone has to give for our child. Cause we want them to get better. We hate to see them in pain.
For the first poster, it must be sad to be you. I hope you never have to go through the pain that Depp is feeling now. But remember this, what you wish on one person, will come back to you, Threefold!!!

He didn't wish anything! He just announced the obvious: prayer is useless.

quemara, moribull, and itsme2 had said it so right, and so well!
Hey! I may or may not always like actor's,the rich, the well-to-do,the famous, or whatever, but this man's child is innocent, and I happen to love children!
So I will pray for this child in the hope that she will have a long, & healthy life!
I don't care how famous or loaded $$$ Johnny Depp is, that has nothing to do with his little girl Lily Rose, God Bless her...& I will especially pray for her parents for solace, and strength for they're turbulent times that they are going through now,...& no I am not a fan of Johnny Depp, but he's allright...

I guess i dont follow. are you asking that question of netscape or of johnny depp? because if your asking it of the girls father the answer seems obvious... because he can. if my child were sick, in my quest to make her better I would leave no stone unturned. including advertising for well wishes.
and besides... I dont think johnny depp is asking anyone to pray at the expense of their other prayers... there is no call to cease and desist prayers for anyone else. why do you assume that such a thing is inherent in the request?

I'm disgusted that there is more concerned generated over the title of this story than the fact that there is a seriously ill innocent child here. My 6 year old boy was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I'm devastated by this news, and the last thing I care about is the symantics being argued here. I pray and hope for the best for his daughter as well as my son. The idea of trying to figure out who "deserves" prayer......that's absolutely absurd.

I am sorry for your son and hope the best for him.
I would never have paid attention to a story about Joe Blow whose daughter was dying of a mysterious disease. But say it was Johnny Depp's daughter and that grabbed my attention. He is an actor I admire and enjoy watching his films, so this story touched me. Now, I've read about you and your daughter and that's touched me also.
So, as an answer to abntv, that's why it was necessary to advertise. It showed me there is more than just one child to be concerned about.
I still don't believe in the power of prayer but will still hope the best for you and Johnny and would never tell others not to pray.

I seriously don't get it...
Does God not know bad things are going down, so he needs prayers to tell him?
Or maybe it's that God does know what's happening, but he only can do anything if people pray. It's like God's magic juice runs low, and he can only get more by people praying. Is that how it is with your god?

Unfortunately, this world is full of miserable, lonely, and hateful people that want everyone else to suffer and be lonely and miserable just like them. Because they are unhappy in their life, because they refuse to do anything to change their life, they feel it is easier to place the blame on someone else. Some blame God for their situation and some blame you, me, and the earth and sky. Misery loves company and by responding to these idiots that hate life in general, you are lowering yourself to their level. Stop responding, it feeds them when you're angry. Just bless them and go and have a wonderful evening. They can stay here and complain, but we'll be having a happy, enjoyable and loving evening. And, I will also be praying for lily rose. Have a WONDERFUL evening.

Who exactly are you referring to? People who say that prayer isn't effective? That isn't "hating life", it is observing a fact. What a stupid comment, it hasn't a thing to do with misery. I am extremely happy, except when I read these comments and am reminded of how terrible deluded so many people are- my goal is to get people to open their eyes, turn on their brains, and snap out of fantasy-land so they don't slow down the rest of us. Where has anyone thus far posted a comment that would suggest they dislike life?

Do you ever have anything positive to talk about? Why is it your job to make people 'snap out' of it? If people want to pray, let them pray, in peace, without your 2 cents. And you get so angry when someone is upbeat or positive about the power of prayer. Why? Is this something personal for you? I want to understand where you're coming from, but you try to put people on the defense right away. Kind of odd to me that you get so worked up.

By the way, are we all slowing you down? Then stop wasting your time by reading and adding your 2 cents everywhere. Stop slowing yourself down.

okay deadhead here goes...... god, universe, higher power, its all symantics in my book. all i know is praying or channeling or talking to the stars or the universe or your guardian angels or to any other being -- metaphysical or the like is as real as a radio wave. you cant see it -- but you sure can hear the music coming out of the strange little box. everything is made of energy and is always going somewhere, so why rule out prayer or well wishing as "not real". you say that this type of thinking "slows down the rest of us". slows you down from what? evolving? your mentality is typical of the people who used to think the world was flat. last time i checked that's called digression. FYI, i will stand atop my hill tonight and personally ask the stars that i often converse with to comfort and heal sweet lily rose. i will also ask them to send you a good wish too. there will be a sign. pay attention and have your antena up so you dont miss it.

I am so sorry to hear the bad news of little Lily-rose. I will pray for her and the whole family. Jonny Depp is a good father and he is a nice actor, pray for him as well. God bless them!

Whether some believe it would help or not, I will still pray for Depp's young child. It's heartbreaking to even see a child get hurt, yet alone see that your own child has a serious illness. It doesn't matter whose child it is, it is still someone in need of some sort of help. If all I can offer is a prayer or two, then that is what I will do.
And for those who think prayer doesn't work: fine. Don't pray then. However, to constantly criticize those who do pray is simply imbecilic, and you only make yourself look like a major jack-a$$ in the process. So what if you think prayer doesn't work?! Make your statement once, and leave it at that. It's rather redundant to make a negative response to every person who replies on here that they believe in God and prayer.

Well, the scientific literature is not as clear as people might think on the subject of the ability of prayer (distant healing) to actually provide benefit to sick people.
Some studies have shown benefit.
