Karina: Though known to a younger generation for his role on Everybody Love Raymond, which earned him seven Emmy nominations, Peter Boyle enjoyed a rich career in film and TV dating back to the 60s. IMDb has Boyle's full filmography; highlights include appearances in Medium Cool, Taxi Driver, Monster's Ball and, of course, Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. On their blog, Premiere Magazine has posted excerpts from a 2003 interview with Boyle and Brooks about that film:

"'I said to Peter, 'I want you to take an old-fashioned vaudeville handoff. When it comes to the lyric 'Puttin' on the Ritz,' you know, just . . . take it!' [Brooks] says. Though it was a run-through, he fortuitously had the camera running when Boyle came out with his hilarious high-pitched slur: Punnondariiiiiiiiiizz! 'Thank God we got it on film.'"

Here's a clip of that scene, via You Tube:

I didn't watch Everybody Loves Raymond that much, but Young Frankenstein is a classic.

I agree. Young Frankenstein had a totally outstanding cast, but Boyll is the most memorable Frankenstein's monster you'll find anywhere.

Absolutely, Boyle was great as the monster, remember him shouting "Puttin' on the Ritz!" and try not to laugh.

When Doris Roberts' domineering spouse in "Raymond" once defended herself against Boyle's husband, she said she was more than a trophy wife! Watchng Boyle wait and wait and wait while the audience laughed before asking "What contest in hell did I win?" brought it home. Rest in peace, character actor.

What a quiet legend. Young Frankenstein obviously was a big role for him but I can't believe his role as Lazlo in Where the Buffalo Roam (1980) was not even mentioned. Its a classic and man did he tear into that movie with great energy and zeal. That is the Peter Boyle that I will always remember. He was a comedic master and will be missed.

I'll always remember him as Hunter S. Thompson's fabled lawyer Lazlo from "Where The Buffalo Roam."

R.I.P. funny man. You'll be sorely missed.

John Lennon was best man at his wedding? Who would of thought. All the great character actors have so much depth to them, layer upon layer. He was a real talent, sympathy to his family, but I am sure he though, is in a great place with some great company....

This has darkened my day. I pray for his friends and family, and for all of his fans.

He was exceptional in young frankenstein, johnny dangerously, and all of his films. He had a great comic delivery, and he will be missed.

I think a Peter Boyle marathon is due at my house tonight.

His best role, IMHO, was the role he played as the father of a runaway daughter in the movie "Joe".

Great role, great actor, rough movie to watch if you have daughters.

It wouldn't surprise me. After all our country knew the Romans in the Lead mines suffered in the worst ways. Teh Romans sent their slaves down there, and there is overwhelming evidence that exposure to lead hurts us. So, why in the 1900's did they put it in our gas, our paint, and our pencils?

Why is fluoride in our water, there must be safer chemicals to add to our nations water!

Why do fish in the rivers develop extra sexual organs from all the estrogen in the water from birth control pills?

I love our Country and the world, these questions need to be addressed! I hope my fellow world citizens with no be sitting on their hands for ever!!!

I never knew his roles much outside of Raymond but he broke new grounds with his hilarious "marriage is horrible" jokes and antics.

I say they should run a Peter Boyle marathon on TBS or whatever station that is that runs Raymond ;x

Has anyone seen the movie 'The Dream Team'?

Boyle was in it as an inmate of a sanitarium, Michael Keaton was also in it, it was hillarious!

A great loss.

Peter Boyle was a classic even in his early carreer.

If any of you have not seen the movie "JOE" or the very off-beat movie "STEEL YARD BLUES" then you must! Seeing them will, in a way, be a tribute to Peter.

Peter Boyle was a great actor, and a great wit. I remember seeing an interview he did, (Who Knows Where or When), It was enlightening to realize that he was not merely an actor, but a tri;u intelligent and witty comentator on both his roles and society. I will miss him.

Say hello to John. We (I) will miss your talent, grace, and class. I will remember seeing and being with you in Chicago, going to The Ambassador East (to the Pump Room) for cocktails, (remember Honor Conway playing her harp--- Macho Man?) and our trials and tribulations together at Second City--- struggling together. Those were the days my friend.... May Piper's Ally remember us both and Flannagans Pub across the street remembember our drinking cheers! I will miss you.
